National Park since 1949, Paklenica takes its name from 'Paklina' local black pine with medicinal properties and which was also manufactured into wax for coating boats.

The Paklenica National Park is an area of 96 km2 located in the south Velebit.  It includes the 2 highest peaks of Velebit: Vaganski vrh (1758m) and Sveto brdo (1753m) and is characterized by two impressive canyons that run through it: mala Paklenica and velika Paklenica.
Paklenica is distinguished by the variety of its landscape: canyons, karrens, rocks, peaks, caves, sources of drinking water...It is mostly covered by forests, flora is exceptional by the vegetation covering the rocky grounds ad meadows (bluebells, orchids, lilies, sage, heather...) and Paklenica is estimated to contain approximately 4,000 animal species.
Hiking trails and marked paths over 150km are accessible to walkers of all levels, to the peaks offering magnificent views on the sea and the region.
The park is renowned for climbing, with 400 climbing routes whose site Anica Kuk, one of the most famous in Europe.

The Paklenica National Park is located in the Zadar region in Starigrad.
Access is easy by road, 40 minutes by car or bus from Zadar.
You can visit the park alone
individually or with day trips that are organized from the major cities.

Possible activities in the National Park Paklenica

Paklenica is a park for hikers and lovers of climbing all levels, from amateurs to experienced athletes.
Hiking: a network of around 150 km of marked paths and trails invites you to discover the beauty of the wilderness by different routes depending on lengh and levels of difficulty, throughout the year.
- The most classic to visit the park is the tourist walking trail from the canyon of Velika Paklenica that leads to the moutaineers lodge after 2h30 leisurely walk. The walk is accessible to everyone on the paths once used by the inhabitants of the mountain. It runs through the forest, along the streams, meadows; by the way, you can drink from the sources of fresh and crystal water, make a stop at the forest hut Lugarnica and on arrival you can eat at the climbers' lodging  'Paklenica'.
- The mountaineers will
join the peaks Sveto brdo and Vaganski vrh, through breathtaking landscapes and panoramas of the sea and the whole region.

For information, there are several montaineers lodges to sleep the park:
- Paklenica lodging, 45 beds in multi-bedrooms, kitchen and dining room,water and electricity. Open daily from 15 June to 15 September and only on weekends to other dates. Price 90kuna (€ 12) per person / night + 5 kunas for using the kitchen.
- Higher in the moutain: 3 little huts, with a capacity of 12, 15 and 10 people.


Climbing: the Paklenica Park is a popular site for climbing, the largest in Croatia.
- Climbers will appreciate over 400 climbing routes of various difficulty levels and lengths
- The park contains the imposing rock Anica kuk, 350 m high, which is part of the most difficult climbing sites in the world and attracts the best climbers.
Every year the competition 'big wall speed climbing' takes place here around May 1st.
The climbing season lasts from early spring until late  autumn.


The visit of the cave Manita Pec: 1h30 walk, this cave is open to visitors since 1937, the visits take place between10 am and 13 am, certain days depending on the time and the tour of the cave is charged(see terms and rates in the topic park access)
