On 17/11/2015 UNESCO created a new label: the UNESCO Global Geoparks


What is a UNESCO Global Geopark ?
UNESCO Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development.
There are 120 UNESCO Global Geopark spread across 33 countries, including 21 european countries.

Papuk Geopark is located in Slavonia, near Pozega in northeastern Croatia. It is characterized by its rich geological structure and diversity of rocks. This wooded mountain peaks at an altitude of 1000m, contrasting with the plains that surround it. It contains varied landscapes: a forest park, valleys crossed by streams, flowering meadows, springs, waterfalls and caves..., archaeological sites from prehistoric, medieval remains...,hiking trails are signposted for walking and cycling and one can also practice climbing.
The main task of the park is geared towards education and sustainability: receiving schools, courses and educational workshops, educational projects, exhibitions, conferences...the opportunity to make visitors aware of the approach of Planet Earth.
