Truffles, a hidden treasure of Zagreb

This rare edible mushroom is hard to find. It matures in autumn and is harvested in winter with specially trained pigs or truffle dogs.The only breed of dogs recognized as truffle hunters is the Lagotto Romagnolo, native to Italy but dogs of other breeds can also be trained for this work.
In Croatia, the truffle is often associated with the region of Istria but if you are in Zagreb, you can you can attend the search for truffles on the natural sites of Dotrscina, Maksimir, Medvedgrad or Veternica. Guided tours are organized for amateurs.
